Zusammenfassungen
This chapter looks at the advantages of being able to use tablets to extend learning beyond traditional classroom spaces. We will consider how they can enhance outdoor learning by combining children’s physical and digital exploration of the world, thinking about how outdoor scenarios can lead to active learning that is open-ended and child-led, and how tablets can capture these valuable experiences. By providing a context for talk and collaboration, technology can promote the development of communication skills alongside understanding of the environment, and enable children to make use of creative modes of communication. This approach is based on a constructivist view of learning, in which children interact with the world around them and with others to create their own frameworks of understanding, reflecting the ideas of theorists such as Vygotsky, Piaget and Bruner. We will suggest apps for making trails and treasure hunts using QR Codes, for manipulating media outdoors, and for using digital magnifiers and photo filters to record findings. And we will draw some conclusions about how the use of tablets beyond the confines of the classroom can help children take ownership over their own learning.
