Wikis explicitly facilitate collaborative text production.

Wikis sind kollaborativ. Wikis beruhen wesentlich auf der Zusammenarbeit einer Gruppe von Nutzern und entfalten ihr volles Potenzial erst auf dieser sozialen Ebene. Folgerichtig gibt Cunningham seiner einführenden Publikation 'The Wiki Way' auch den Untertitel 'Quick Collaboration on the Web'.

Wiki collaboration systems encourage student-centered learning environments, because they encourage students to be co-creators of course content. The class wiki becomes a central repository of knowledge acquired and expressed by students in the class. As a result, the class develops a sense of community ownership of course content, and students become active contributors to each other's learning.

Collaborative writing is the basic function of the wiki from which all other applications can be seen to derive. The nature of that writing may be a diverse ränge of information products or knowledge artefacts. Educators and learners can collaboratively construct a ränge of factual and creative material, from group writing assignments, class presentations, policy and procedures documentation, test questions, course and curriculum content, to newsletters, magazines or a school history.

Wikis können eingesetzt werden, um mit mehreren Autoren gemeinsam einen Text zu erstellen. Dabei kann es sich um ein zeitlich begrenztes Projekt handeln - zum Beispiel das Schreiben eines Buches oder Artikels - oder um ein längerfristiges Projekt - zum Beispiel das Erstellen einer Online-Enzyklopädie oder einer Software-Dokumentation. Der Kreis der Benutzer kann auf wenige Autoren eingeschränkt werden und das Wiki kann nur intern oder nach Anmeldung zugänglich sein - oder ein Wiki kann offen im Internet zur Verfügung stehen und beliebig viele Autoren zum Mitschreiben einladen.
